One of these standards covers the aforementioned mounting hole patterns located on the back of your tv which you may also see referred to as the flat display.

The vesa interface standard defines the distance in millimeters between the four mounting holes on the back of a tv distance horizontally x distance vertically. Mid size displays sometimes use this interface. Typical monitors in this class weigh less than 50 lbs 23 kg. The vesa standard enables this mount to attach to anything that is vesa compatible for the utmost in mounting flexibility.

A vesa pattern refers to the configuration of the four mounting holes on the back of a flat panel tv or computer monitor. For example in a 100 x 100 mm vesa pattern the screw holes are arranged in a square 100 mm apart.
